- Introduce yourself
- Confirm patient details
- Explain procedure: “I need to perform an ECG which is an electrical trace of your heart, it involves me putting sticky pads on your chest & limbs, I will connect these to an ECG machine to record the trace, procedure involves no electricity.
- Gain consent and confidentiality
- Do you understand? Ok to proceed?
- Remove socks and tshirt.

- Chest electrodes V1-V6
A
- Identify 4th ICS FROM angle of Louis
- Attach V1 (right 4th ICS)
- Attach V2 (left 4th ICS)
- Attach V4 (5th ICS/MCL (apex))
- Attach V3 in middle of v2 & v4
- Attach v5 (left anterior axillary line)
- Attach v6 (left mid axillary line)

- Limb electrodes

- RIDE YOUR GREEN BIKE
- Red lead right arm bony ulnar styloid process
- Yellow lead left arm
- Green lead left leg at ankle
- Black lead right leg at ankle

- Record trace
A
- Turn on ECG, load paper
- Tell patient to remain still and not talk (reduce electrical artefact)
- Print and label trace with patient details
- Trace obtained switch off ECG
- Detach leads from electrodes and remove adhesive pads
- Thank and allow patient to dress
- Wash hands
