What contains the appetite regulation center and regulates when the body is hungry and when it isn’t hungry or satisfied.
Hypothalamus
Eating disorders are influenced by
society and culture
Consists of recurrent episodes of eating significantly more than most people would in a similar period of time under similar circumstances.
Binge eating disorder.
Defined as a body mass of 30 or greater
Obesity
Morbid fear of obesity, has a distorted body image and preoccupation with food and refusal to eat. Often see themselves as “fat” when they are obviously underweight or emaciated.
Anorexia Nervosa
Has symptoms of hypothermia, bradycardia, hypotension with orthostatic changes, peripheral edema, lanugo, and metabolic changes. Amenorrhea can occur even before severe weight loss.
Anorexia nervosa.
Episodic uncontrolled compulsive rapid ingestion of large quantities of food over a short period of time followed by trying to rid of the body of the excess calories by self induced vomiting.
Bulimia nervosa
Most pts. are usually normal weight range. Often also have depression, anxiety, or suffer from substance abuse.
Bulimia nervosa
Suffer from dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, tooth erosion, tears in esophageal mucosa and Russell’s sign (knuckle calluses)
Bulimia nervosa
Differs from bulimia because this disorder does not engage in behaviors to rid excess calories.
Binge eating disorder
Priorities include:
Imbalanced nutrition, deficient fluid volume, ineffective denial, disturbed body image/low self esteem, and anxiety.
When hospitalized are most often seen on what type of floor?
Med Surg
Interventions: determine appropriate calories, do not focus on food or eating, keep a strict record of I&Os.
Imbalanced nutrition and deficient fluid volume.
Interventions: est. trusting relationship, avoid arguing or bargaining with client
Denial
Intervention: encourage diary of food intake. Provide instruction about medication.
Obesity
Intervention: promote feelings of control, help client realize perfection is unrealistic.
Help identify positive attributes, and refer to support or therapy group
Disturbed body image/low self esteem
Examples of supportive educational services
weight watchers, overeaters anonymous, national association of anorexia nervosa and associated disorders, and national eating disorders association.
Treatment includes
Behavior modification, individual therapy, family therapy, and medication.
