metabolic alteration due to: bowel loss (enema, laxative)
metabolic acidosis - loss of HCO3-
ASS-dosis :)
metabolic alteration due to: purging (vomiting)
metabolic alkalosis - loss of H+ and Cl-
refeeding syndrome
rare, life threatening complication of anorexia nervosa that is often not recognized
- cardiovascular, neurologic, hematologic issues due to shifts in PO4- from extra to intracellular spaces s/t total body P depletion due to malnutrition
results: cardiac arrest, delirium
reduce risk with: slower refeeding, replacing P, avoid high Na intake
monitor: serum electrolytes, edema, congestive heart failure
bulimia nervosa: diagnostic criteria
- binge eating AND compensatory behaviors occur at least 2x week for 3 months
- self-eval unduly influenced by body weight/shape
- doesn’t occur exclusively during episode of AN
bulimia nervosa: unhealthy eating pattern
- binge 2x weekly to several times daily
- secretive, frenzied, brief
- often high calorie intake
- post-binge anguish and compensatory behaviors

binge eating: overeating accompanied by loss of control

- recurrent binge eating, at least 2x week for 3 months
- frequent feelings of lack of control over eating
- does NOT use inappropriate compensatory behavior

- large amounts rapidly, without hunger until uncomfortably full
