A

rare, life threatening complication of anorexia nervosa that is often not recognized

  • cardiovascular, neurologic, hematologic issues due to shifts in PO4- from extra to intracellular spaces s/t total body P depletion due to malnutrition
    results: cardiac arrest, delirium

reduce risk with: slower refeeding, replacing P, avoid high Na intake

monitor: serum electrolytes, edema, congestive heart failure
