Dysfunction of Hypothalamus
Anorexia
- Extreme Thinness
- Relentless pursuit of thinness and unwillingness to maintain a normal or healthy weight
- Intense fear of gaining weight
- Distorted body image
- Self- esteem heavily influenced by body weight/shape
Onset of anorexia
Onset: 14-18 years old
Restrictive Type of anorexia
controls what to eat (dieting and fasting)
Binge/Purging Type
Binge eats and then purges (self-induced vomiting, misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas)
Meds for Anorexia
Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
Fluoxetine (Prozac) – monitor for weight loss
Bulimia
• Recurrent and frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food and feeling lack of control over these episodes.
(more than 2x a week for 6 months)
• Follows binge eating with compensatory behavior such as forced vomiting, use of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, exercise or combination of behaviors
• Looks healthy or normal or slightly overweight
Onset of bulimia
Late adolescence or early adulthood (18-19 years old)
Meds for bulimia
fluoxetine -Prozac
Anorexia BMI
17.5 or lower
Normal weight BMI
20-24.9
Overweight BMI
25-29.9
Obesity
30+
