Easter Monday Flashcards
Title analysis
Easter has connotations of suffering, sacrifice and resurrection
She suffers while he sacrifices himself
“In the last letter that I had from France”
The letters act as a symbol for the friendship and connection between the speaker and Thomas
Double meaning in this phrase- it’s clear that this is precious to the speaker as not only was it the most recent letter it was the final one. Now communication with her friend has been severed
Alliteration creates soft sounds, reinforcing the grief felt by the speaker
Previous sounds are immediately juxtaposed with the harsh alliterative sounds here, evoking the sound of the speaker’s tears as they try to contain their emotions
“We sowed our earliest seeds, and in the orchard”
The superlative ‘earliest’ shows the speaker taking comfort from the early memories they made in their relationship
However, the natural imagery could symbolise her intention of continuing her life without her close friend
The enjambment between lines supports the idea that she hoped the friendship would continue on. Or by creating a fast pace, it shows how life will have to continue swiftly on without him. In this final stanza, optimism is mingled with grief
