Easter Defininitions Flashcards
Osmosis
The movement of water across a semi permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Active Transport
Requires energy, Low to high concentration
Hypotonic
lower concentration of solutes than inside a cell (Burst)
Hypertonic
Higher concentration of solutes than inside of cell (shrink)
Isotonic
Same concentration of solutes than inside the cell
Pulse
The alternate contraction and relaxation of arteries
Blood Pressure
Force exerted by blood against blood vessel walls
Tissue Fluid
Fluid forced out of cappilaries
Root Pressure
The forced upward movement of water and minerals from the root up through the stem. This is due to new water being absorbed into the roots, Pushing water there further up
Cohesion
When water molecules stick together and to the walls of xylem
Transpiration
Loss of water vapor from a plant mostly through stomata
Zone of Protection
Layer of cells fot a root cap to protect meristem as it pushes through soil
Meristematic Zone
Where cells divide and grow by mitosis
Zone of Elongation
Cells expand and elongate
Zone of differention
Cells devolp into different types of tissue
Herbaceous
Soft and green plants eg grass
Woody
Hard woody and brown plants eg Oak tree
Leaf scar
Left on stem after a leaf falls off
Lenticels
Openings in stems that allow for gaseous exchange
Terminal Bud
Causes stem to keep growing at tip
Girdle Scar
scar found when leaf or branch falls off
Dermal
Outer layer of plant like its skin
Ground
Bulk of plant between dermal and vascular tissues
