WHAT DID JESUS’ MIRACLES
OVER SICKNESS REVEAL?
While all of Jesus’ miracles reveal something important about the nature of God’s
reign
the healing miracles echo important teachings from both the parables and
Jesus’ own actions towards marginalised groups. In his healing miracles
Jesus is
placing those who are sick at the heart of the Kingdom of God.
Why were people who were sick marginalised in Jesus’ time?
In the society of Jesus’ time people who were considered to be ‘sick’ could include
anyone with an illness or impairment. These were sometimes believed to be the
result of a person disobeying God
or their parents disobeying God before they
were born. The Old Testament details severe physical punishments for anyone who
does not obey the voice of God
for example: ‘The Lord will strike you with wasting
disease and with fever
inflammation and fiery heat’ (Deuteronomy 28:22). Many
people at this time therefore thought that illnesses and impairments were God’s
way of showing displeasure
and they may not have helped those affected for fear
of interfering with the will of God. Jesus’ actions contrasted with these beliefs as he
taught that everyone has equal worth and everyone is deserving of God’s love.
