Action taken by the government
The Andrews government has agreed to pay the union contracted to build the road, $339 million to walk away from the project. The toll road that was to link the Eastern Freeway to CityLink will also cost taxpayers an additional $81 million but Premier Daniel Andrews said that this money would now go towards funding it’s proposed Melbourne Metro rail tunnel.
What is the issue
The coalition was to invest $1.5 billion in Melbourne’s east west link. The link was intended to take pressure off the other cross-town link in Melbourne. The decision made by the Labour Party to scrap the idea, had costed around $640 million for nothing. No road and no jobs. There is still $3 billion set aside to build this road.
