Describe the results of China’s early contacts with the west
Lack of military technology proved a serious disadvantage in mid-1800’s. Europe and United States used their military strength to force their way into China. These changes forced on China by western powers upset countrys internal trade network. Changes resulted in widespread famine, and series or rebellions brok out across country. Result China entered period of turmoil lasting for decades

Treatment from western powers angered the Chinese, and people called for a change. They disagreed on what course to take. Some favored giving up traditional ways and accepting western culture. Others wanted to reject western culture. Others only wanted parts of western culture such as technology as a means to protect and defend own culture. During struggle nationalists party emerged
