16
Q

What type of volcanic activity is common in the East African Rift?

A

Stratovolcanoes and shield volcanoes.

17
Q

What role does the East African Rift play in climate patterns?

A

It affects local weather patterns and rainfall distribution.

18
Q

Which species is often associated with the Lake Victoria region in the East African Rift?

A

Nile crocodile

19
Q

What is the relationship between the East African Rift and the Great Lakes?

A

The rift has formed several large lakes, including Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Malawi.

20
Q

How high is Mount Kilimanjaro?

21
Q

What countries does the East African Rift go through?

A

Ethiopia down to Mozambique (Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, etc)

22
Q

What is an example of a volcano? Give height and where

A

Ol Odinyo Lengai, Tanzania, 2,962 metres

23
Q

When did Lengai erupt?

A

4th September 2007, 3km high ash column, 300 metre wide crater and continued into 2018, forced evacuations of 3 villages

24
Q

How long ago was the East African rift valley formed?

A

22-25 million years ago

25
How was it formed?
When elevated heat flow from the mantle caused a pair of thermal bushes in central Kenya and Afar region in Ethiopia, as up the bulge formed is stretched and fractured the crust into a series of faults, convection currents in the asthenosphere caused extensions of the crust as it extends, the grabens (sunk parts) and the Horst (raised parts)
