Earthworks Flashcards
Bearing capacity
The safe load per unit area that ground can carry (kN/m2)
Bearing pressure
Pressure produced on the grounds by the applied loads kN/m2
Settlement
Refers to ground movement and can be caused by deformation of the soil due to loads imposed on it
Backfill
Material from the site that, if suitable, will be used to fill in around the walls, foundation and pipe trenches
Self-weight loads
Permanent components of a structure. Ex foundation, walls, coulums
Imposed loads
Non-permanent components of a structure, people furniture vehicles
Differential settlement
Uneven settlement of structure due to load distribution or poor soil conditions
Deep foundation
Transfer load of structure to soil some distance below ground floor of building
Foundation types
- Strip foundation
- Raft foundation
- Pad foundation
- Pile foundation
- Caissons.
