Earths system Flashcards
any property that can be observed using the five senses or can be measured without changing the matter.
Physical properties
Weight -how heavy an object is (mass is how much ‘‘stuff’‘(matter)something is made of)
weight/mass
a state of matter that maintains its own shape instead of conforming to the shape of its container
solid
something that can flow and takes the shape of it’s container , like water or juice, but it has fixed amount of space (volume), similar to how a solid stays the same .
liquid
it allows something like heat or electricity to flow or pass though it easily.
conduct
energy that moves to something hot to something cold, a form of energy .
heat
A substance found in nature , minarals make up rocks .
minerals
how easily or difficult it is to scratch a minerals surface.
hardness
the color of its powder when you rub it on a hard , rough surface like a tile.
steark
the colored powder left behind when a mineral is scraped across a hard surface like a ceramic tile , which helps idenity the minaral by its ‘‘streak’’ color.
tiles
it’s what light reflects back to our eyes .MInarals are colored because they absorb some colors of light and reflect the rest.
color
How shiny a rock or minaral looks when light shines on it , like a mirror ,or glassy ,or even dull .(Luster is a physical property used by minerralogists to help identify minerals.
luster
How some minarals break along smooth, flat lines instead of randomly , like when you crack an egg
cleavage
where you try to scratch a rock with different objects (like a fingernail or a penny ) to see if its hard or soft
Scratch test
surface, erodsion ,weathering , rapid , drastic , slow changes , landslide, volcano ,earthquake , magnetic
supporting volcabulary
A natural formed combination of materials and other natural materials .
rocks
A solid , naturally formed subtance that always has the same composition and the same properties .
minarals
the dirt and stuff that settles to the bottom of liquids , or is carried and then deposited by water , wind or ice .
sedamint
Rock formed from compacted sediment .
sedimentary
Rock formed from magma or lava
igneous
Rock formed from existing rock; heat and pressure cause the minarals to form new combinations or new crystals .
metamorphic
Magma-molton rock whithin Earth.
Attributes or characteristics.
Pressure - is like a push or sqeeze, and that pressure helps change the rocks in the Earth.
Rock cycle - The continuos process of change in whitch new rocks are formed from old rocks materials .
