Earths Resources Flashcards
Definition of natural resources
Products made from the environment around us
Definition of finite resources
A resource being used up at a faster rate than it can be replaced
Definition of renewable resources
A resource that can be replaced at the same rate it is used
Examples of finite resources
Metal ores
Crude oil
Limestone
Examples of renewable resources
Crops
Plants
What is potable water
Water that is fit to drink
What is pure water
Water from a source that can be purified using distillation
What is reverse osmosis
A method of purifying water using a membrane
What is sewage treatment
The process by which waste water is made safe before it is returned to the environment
Screening
The first stage of sewage treatment
Large objects and grit are removed
Primary treatment
The second stage of sewage treatment
solid sediments are removed after they have been settled and the liquid above is pumped to the next stage
Secondary treatment
The third stage of sewage treatment
Bacteria feed on remaining organic matter and harmful micro organisms
Final treatment
Fourth and final stage of sewage treatment
Bacteria-removed-water can be sterilised
What is a Life cycle assessment LCA
Assesses the impact of a product, process or service on the environment
What can the sludge from sewage treatment be used as
Fertiliser on a farm
Source of renewable energy
