Earths formation Flashcards
Approximately when was the Earth formed?
About 4.5 Billion years ago
How was the Earth formed
Intense volcanic eruptions
What were the gases released in the volcanic eruptions
Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, Water vapour, Ammonia gas
How did the oceans form
The Earth cooled down and the water vapour released from volcanic eruptions condensed
How did levels of Carbon Dioxide decrease?
- Photosynthesis
- CO2 dissolved in the ocean
How did Oxygen levels rise
Photosynthesis
Is the Greenhouse Effect good or bad?
Good, Because without it the Earth would be too cold for humans to live on.
How does the greenhouse effect take place?
- Electromagnetic radiation comes from the sun and hits Earths surface
2.Short wavelength radiation is absorbed - Long wavelengths radiation reflected back out into space ( Infrared )
- Infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases and reflected back
- The Earth warms up
When can the Greehouse Effect be Negative
Enhanced greenhouse effect ( increase levels of greenhouse gases Co2 , CH4)
What process increases greenhouse gas levels
- Burning of fossil fuels - Release Co2
- Deforestation - Release Co2 / prevents abosorbtion of co2.
- Farming ( rice feilds) - Release CH4
- Catle during digestion - Release CH4
What is formed when fossils fuels are burned ( combustion)
Carbon Dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Carbon soot ( “particulates”), Sulphur dioxide
How could car engines effect the atmosphere
When car engines heats up Nitrogen and Oxygen in the air react to form Nitrogen Oxides
What is the effect of Carbon Dioxide
Global Warming
What is the effect of Carbon Monoxide
Toxic Gas
Why is Carbon Monoxide a problem
- Colourless
- Odorless / non-irritating
Gas
