Earths Changing Surface Flashcards
EROSION
Processes that moves sediment from one place to another. The four types of erosion is WATER WIND GLACIERS and GRAVITY
DEPOSITION
The laying down of sediment that has been eroded. The 3 formations is DELTAS and ALLUVIAL FANS, FLOODPLAINS, and MEANDORS and OXBOW LAKES.
TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS
Is a two-time model of the earths surface. It is also known as a count out maps. Elevation of a sea level is shown using contour lines
Contour line
A contour line connects points of equal elevation. They show the elevation and shape of the land. Contour lines can also show a depression , crater, or sink hole on map dashed lines on the inside of a contour line.
Relief
Relief is a difference between high and low elevation.
Contour interval
The contour interval is a difference in elevation between each line. The difference must be the same between all lines
Index contour
Usually every fifth line printed darker and has an elevation print on it
Rules of contours
One contour lines never cross. Two contours form closed loops even if not shown in the map. Three contours bend upstream when crossing a stream. Four Maximum possible location for a hill is one less than what the next contour should be
Steeper slope
Contour lines are closer together
WEATHERING
Processes that work to break down rock. The two types of weathering is CHEMICAL,MECHANICAL
Gradual slope
Contour lines are father apart
Benchmark
A location whose exact elevation is known and is noted on a brass it aluminum plate. Benchmarks are shown on maps by an X with the letters BM written next to them.
Map scale
Indicates the distance on the map compared to distance in the real world.
