Earths Cannging Surface Flashcards
Erosion
Processes that move sediment from one place to another.
Deposition
The laying down of sediment that has been eroded
Oxbox lake
Meander that gets cut off from the river
Meanders
Bend in a river
Deltas
Fan shaped deposition at the mouths (end) of streams
Rain washing away soil from a hillside
Weathering
Layers of sediment forming at the bottom of the ocean
Deposition
Muddy water being carried away by a fast river
Erosion
Breaking down of rocks
Weathering
Settling of sediment
Deposition
Movement of sediment
Erosion
A mudslide flowing down a steep hill
Erosion
Rain washing away soil from a hillside
Weathering
Waves dropping sand on the beach
Deposition
Topographic map
A two-dimensional model of the earths surface
Contour lines
Connects points of equal elevation
Contour interval
The difference in elevation between each line. The difference must be the same between ALL lines
Index contour
Usually every 5th line is printed darker and has an elevation printed on it
Weathering
Processes that work to break down rock.
Bench mark
A location whose exact elevation is known and is noted on a brass or aluminum plate. Benchmarks are shown on maps by an x with the letters BM written next to them
Map scale
Indicates the distance on the map compared to distance in the real world
