Earthquakes and volcanoes: Distribution of volcanoes, earthquakes, etc Flashcards
Where do earthquakes occur?
Across all types of plate boundaries
Where is the largest concentration of earthquakes?
The Pacific Ring of Fire
What is The Pacific Ring of Fire?
Where most earthquakes and active volcanoes occur.
Where are volcanoes distributed to?
Near convergent and divergent plate boundaries.
What are the hazards of earthquakes?
- ground shaking
- landslides
- tsunamis
- soil liquefaction
What are the hazards of volcanic eruptions?
- tephra
- volcanic gases
- lava flows
- pyroclastic flows
- lahars
- volcanic landslides
What is soil liquefaction?
A phenomena whereby saturated, loose soil loses it structure and transforms into a thick liquid due to the ground shaking
What are pyroclastic flows?
Hot clouds of gas, ash and rocks travelling down the slopes of a volcano
What are lahars?
Mudflows comprising volcanic ash and water
What are tsunamis?
A series of ocean waves that are caused by undersea earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides.
