Earthquakes Flashcards
Focus
Physics a point at which rays of life, heat,or other radiation, meet after being refracted or reflected.
Epicenter
A point, directly above the true center of disturbance, from which the shock waves of an earthquake apparently radiate.
Seismograph
Any of various instruments for measuring and recording the vibrations of earthquakes.
Primary waves
A P-waves are a type of body wave, called seismic waves in seismology, that travel through a continuum and are the first waves from an earthquake to arrive at a seismograph. The continuum is made up of gases (as sound waves), liquids, or solids, including the Earth.
Secondary waves
A transverse earthquake wave that travels through the interior of the earth and is usually the second conspicuous wave to reach a seismograph.
Surface wave
A seismic wave that travels along or parallel to the earth’s surface.
Seismic wave
A wave of energy that generated by an earthquake or other vibration and that travels within he earth or along its surface.
