Q

Explain the occurrence of an earthquake at a conservative margin.

A

Two plates are sliding against each other in opposite directions or at different speeds. The plates create friction as they slide at force, building up pressure. When one plate suddenly shifts, the pressure is released. This is an earthquake.

Q

Describe P wave movement.

A

Push and pull the earth in the same direction the wave is travelling in. They travel very fast.

Q

Describe the movement of an S wave.

A

S waves move at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel (side to side). These waves are likely to cause more damage.
