Earthquakes Flashcards
What epoch do we live on?
The Holocene
What are hydrothermal events?
An opening in the sea floor out of which heated mineral rich water flows
What are stromatolites
Layered rock like structured formed by Cyanobacteria
How do her hydrothermal vents help evolution?
The vents expel fluid that was heated to extreme temperatures when seeing through the earths crust from the ocean, the vents influenced evolution of organisms in the deep sea
What atmospheric event coincided with the rapid evolution of diverse life form
Great oxidation event
Layers of the Earth
- Crust.
- Mantle.
- Outer core.
- Inner Core.
- Lithosphere.
- Asthenosphere.
- Mesosphere
What are convection currents that drive tectonic
The molten rock in earths mantle below the crust
Where do earthquakes occur?
Earthquakes occur long faults
They happen when two plates push-up against one another pressure buildup. Eventually, this pressure is released and an earthquake occurs.
What is the ring of fire?
The Ring of fire is a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes
The difference between P waves S waves and surface waves
-p waves: fastest, compressional ,travel through solids, liquids and gas
gases
-s waves: slower, travel only through solids, vibrates up and down as the wave moves forward
-surface waves: slowest ,travel along the surface and caused the most damage
