Earthquakes Flashcards
What are earthquakes
Earthquakes are vibrations of the earths crust caused by movements at plate boundary and major fault lines
Where do earthquakes occur
Earthquakes can occur at all four major plate boundaries but most severe earthquakes usually occur at CONSERVATIVE and DESTRUCTIVE plate boundaries
What do earthquakes produce
Long shockwaves (seismic waves) that travel out from the centre of the crust
What is the focus
The focus is where seismic waves spread out from . The focus is the point where the earthquakes starts. Near the focus, the waves are stronger cause more damage
What is the epicentre
The epicentre is the point on the earths surface immediately above the surface
Why do Earthquakes happen
Earthquakes happen suddenly due to enormous tension that is built up over time being released quickly and therefore triggers the earthquake to occur.
What are seismic waves
Seismic waves are types of energy that travel through the earths layers and is generated form the quick release of energy
Magnitude
The magnitude tells you how powerful an earthquake is
Seismograph
A seismograph is the tool used to measure earthquakes
