Earthquakes Flashcards
What are earthquakes
Are vibrations of the earths crust caused by moment at plate boundaries and major fault lines
Where are the most severe earthquakes happening
At conservative and destructive plate boundaries
How does an earthquake work
It’s when the ground shakes . Caused by sudden movements between the plates
What are the shockwaves from earthquakes called
Seismic waves
What are seismic waves
Long shokwaves that travel from the center of the crust, just like a stone being thrown into a pond
What is the focus (earthquakes)
The waves spread out from the focus . The focus is the point where the earthquakes starts, near the focus the waves are stronger causing more damage
What is the epicentre
Is the point on the earth surface immediately above the focus
What scale do u use to measure the earthquake
The Richter scale is used to measure the magnitude using a seismograph
What’s the short term impact of an earthquake
Roads destroyed
Buildings collapse
Debris cause injury/death
Water or gas mains burst
Electricity
What are the long term impact
Disease
Mental trauma
People lose livelihood
Tsunami
Landslides
