Earthquakes Flashcards
What types of waves are S waves
transverse waves
What types of waves are P waves
longitudinal waves
What types of waves are surface waves
longitudinal
What materials can P waves travel through
solids and liquids
What materials can S waves travel through
solids
Where do surface waves travel
Along the surface of the crust. (Not through liquids)
slowest seismic wave
surface wave
quickest seismic wave
P wave
what seismic wave does the most damage
surface waves
What layers of the Earth do S waves travel through
Crust and mantle. Creates an S wave shadow zone as they cannot travel through liquid outer core.
What layers of the Earth do P waves travel through
All. There is also a P wave shadow zone that occurs due to refraction
What happens to seismic waves as they travel through layers of the Earth
They refract as the layers are made of different materials with different densities and change in speed. In each Layer they also refract as the layer becomes more dense the closer it is to the centre of the Earth.
lag time
difference between arrival time of P and S waves
How can the epi centre of an earthquake be pin pointed
triangulation
