earthquakes Flashcards
what is the focus
where the earthquake originates from
what is the epicentre
the point directly above the focus on the earths surface
seismic waves
the energy spreading out from the focus
fault
the joint between two moving plates
describe the 4 steps of an earthquake happenening
- plates try to move
- friction caused them to get stuck and pressure builds up
- pressure gets too high and plates shift in a sudden movement
- vibrations are sent through the ground causing earthquakes
what are the two scales that are used to measure earthquakes
mercalli and richter
how does the mercalli scale measure earthquakes?
the impacts
how does the richter scale measure earthquakes?
the magnitude
positives of the mercalli scale
the mercalli scale is good to see what the impact of an earthquake and how much damage is has caused
negatives of mercalli
it is subjective so not very accurate. cannot be used in remote areas. it is hard to compare earthquakes as there is a twelve point scale that does not have decimals.
negatives of richter
it does not tell you how much damage has been done in an earthquake.
positives of richter
objective and uses a scientific machine so more accurate. can be used in uninhabited areas. uses decimals so it’s easier to compare.
primary effects
fissures in roads, ground shaking, dam distrurbances, gas and water pipes bursting, landslides, building collapsed. ground ruptured
secondary effects
roads blocked. dam disturbances, floods, tsunamis, contaminated water, soil liquefaction, aftershocks
