Earthquake Hazards Flashcards
What is earthquake?
• Vibration of the earth produced by rapid release of energy from the lithosphere
• Produced by slippage in fault
The point within eartg where faulting begins
Focus
The point directly above the focus of the surface
Epicenter
Energy released by eartgquake, it travels to all direction
Seismic waves
Earthquake that occurs sometime soon after a major earthquake
Aftershock
Device used to record the motion of the ground during an eartgquake
Seismograph
Instrument that detect seismic waves
Seismometer
Records intensity, height, and amplitude of seismic waves
Seismograph
Earthquake agents that have the potential to cause harm to vulnerable targets
Earthquake hazards
What are primary effects?
Permanent features, causes damage to natural or human-constructed objects
What are secondary effects?
When ground movement leads to another destruction
Ground rupture/displacement
Primary effects (caused by movement of the fault)
Liquefaction
Secondary effects (caused by vibration and water saturation)
Soil becomes less compact and decrease density
Earthquake induced ground subsidence
Primary effects (sink hole)
Landslides
Secondary effects (causes flood, blockage of rivers, and damage to properties)
