Earth, Spheres, Seasons Flashcards
What are the important characteristics that are necessary in supporting life?
Liquid water, Ability to maintain heat, and existence of its atmosphere
What are those two possible sources of where water comes from?
1.)Water released through volcanism.
2.) And water from the icy meteors of the outer regions of the Earth
What are the possible sources for heat?
1.) Heat from the Sun
2.) Heat from the Earth
Why does the Earth provide heat?
It is caused by the radiogenic heat from the radioactive decay of materials in the core and the mantle, released through volcanism, or plate movement.
Why can the Sun provide heat?
Radiation enters the Earth, and gets caught in the atmosphere causing a greenhouse effect, needed by plant called photosynthesis.
What is photosynthesis?
It ensures the right amount and flow of gases on Earth.
What do you call the amount of time that it takes to turn around once on it’s axis?
Earth’s rotation
What is an axis?
Is an imaginary line about which a body rotates
What’s the tilt on Earth’s axis?
23.5 degrees
What are the two different kinds of rotation?
Sidereal day, and Solar day
What is Sidereal day?
Is the amount it takes for Earth to turn on it’s axis
What is solar day?
Is the amount of time it takes for the sun to return to the same spot
Time of Earth’s rotation to it’s axis
23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.09 seconds
What are the seasons on Earth? How many?
4 seasons,
Winter, Fall, Spring, Summer
What are the spheres on Earth? How many?
4 spheres,
Geospehere,
Hydrosphere,
Biosphere,
Atmosphere
