Earth Science John Flashcards
Crust
Earth’s outermost and thinnest layer
Mantle
layer that makes up most of Earth’s material.
Core
Very center of the Earth and is made mostly of iron. Very hot.
Seismograph
an instrument that calculates vibrations from an earthquake
Continental Crust
makes up all the lands and is thickest in mountain areas.
Oceanic crust
lies beneath the ocean floor. Made of a different kind of rock that is dark green or black.
Lithosphere
top part of mantle and crust above it. Most of the lithosphere is under the ocens
Inner core is
solid
Outer core is
liquid
How do scientists learn about the mantle and core?
They study materials pushed up through the crust, the measure vibrations from earthquakes and they perform experiments in labs.
Faults
cracks in Earth’s crust where the surrounding rock has moved or shifted.
Plates
A section of lithosphere. They are large and may include ocean and continent.
Plate boundaries
The edges of the plates.
Converging boundary
Two plates collide or hit each other
Spreading plate boundary
Form when plates move apart from each other. One is under the Atlantic ocean.
