Earth Science Flashcards
The study of the process and phenomena of the atmosphere, especially as the means of forecasting the weather
Meteorology
The scientific study of life in the geologic past, especially through the study of animal and plant fossils
Paleontology
The branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole
Astronomy
The scientific study of earthquakes
Seismology
A relationship between two variables such that both either increase or decrease together
Direct relationship
A relationship between two variables such that when one increases the other decreases and vice versa
Inverse relationship
Events which occur again and again in a regular, repeating pattern. Cyclic changes are predictable
Cyclic
The system in which the changes that are occurring are equal and opposite (balance)
Dynamic equilibrium
Information directly obtained by using one or more of the five senses
Observation
A conclusion based on observations
Inference
Grouping things according to the common characteristics. Classifications are based on observations
Classification
The amount of space occupied by an object or substance
Volume
The force of gravitational attraction between two objects
Weight
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Mass
The study of solid earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the process by which they change
