Earth's Water Flashcards
What state of matter is water vapor?
What state of matter is water vapor?
How does Earth’s water move in a cycle? Be specific.
The earth’s water moves in a cycle where you go through 4 different things: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection.
How are evaporation and condensation related?
You have to go through evaporation before you can go through condensation.
What things can affect the processes of the water cycle?
Wind, Weather, and more
Water vapor condenses as it moves up in the atmosphere. What does this tell you about the conditions higher in the atmosphere?
The air gets colder
How do you think the water cycle would be affected if the atmosphere was the same temperature as the ground?
I think that maybe the clouds wouldn’t turn into clouds
Describe two different roles the ocean plays in the water cycle.
Main water resource and gets evaporated.
How are different sections of the ocean connected?
The ocean is connected by the currents, the global conveyor belt.
How do the circular patterns of ocean currents in the northern hemisphere compare to those in the southern hemisphere?
The water turns clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere.
What are four things that can affect the direction and movement of ocean currents?
What is salinity?
Wind,Temperature,Land, The Rotation of the Earth, Tide
Where in the ocean would you find relatively high salinity?
In the middle.
Why are the surface waters of the Arctic Ocean lower in salinity than the surface waters of the Caribbean Sea?
The Arctic Ocean is lower because it has glaciers, fresh water to mix with the salt.
What types of surface water would be best for drinking?
What types of surface water would be best for drinking?
What percentage of Earth’s water is ocean?
96.5
Why is the amount of freshwater on Earth so limited? (Where is most of the freshwater on Earth located? What makes that challenging when it comes to fresh, drinkable water for people?)
Fresh water is mostly located frozen in ice caps and we need that to live.
Could it be said the Earth has just one ocean?
It could be said because the ocean is all connected by the global conveyor belt/ currents.
Why are ocean temperatures warmest near the equator?
That is where the sun is closest to the earth
