Earth's Systems Flashcards
System
describes the relation between several working elements or units.
feedback
· the process of returning part of the output of a circuit, system, or device to the input
model
A systematic description of an object or phenomenon that shares important characteristics
Biosphere
global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships
Ecosystem
a system, or a group of interconnected elements, formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment
Biome
is a biogeographical unit consisting of a biological community that has formed in response to a shared regional climate.
Organism
is any organic, living system that functions as an individual entity.
Population
all the individuals of one species in a given area.
Biotic Factor
a living thing, as an animal or plant, that influences or affects an ecosystem:
Abiotic Factor
a nonliving condition or thing, as climate or habitat, that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organisms in it:
Community
an assemblage of interacting populations occupying a given area.
Habitat
the natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism:
Niche
the position or function of an organism in a community of plants and animals.
Biodiversity
the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Keystone Species
A species whose presence and role within an ecosystem has a disproportionate effect on other organisms within the system.
exponential growth
is the rapid growth in relation to the growing total number with the passage of time.
Resilence
the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties;
logistic growth
Logistic growth is population increase that happens in a manner that starts slowly, as there are few individuals, then increases in speed as numbers increase, but then decreases when the ecosystem reaches its carrying capacity
carrying capacity
the number or quantity of living things that can be supported by the environment
density-dependent limiting factor
any factor that affects the size of a population of living things in response to the number of individuals per unit area
density independent limiting factor
Any factor that affects the size of a population of living things that DOES NOT depend on the number of individuals per unit area
population density
a measurement of population per unit land area.
emigration
individuals leaving a population
Immigration
individuals entering a population
Resistance
the inherent ability of an environment to resist harmful influences
Ecological Succession
the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time.
stability
maintaining a natural balance
urbanization
the process of making an area more urban (cities)
genetic diversity
genetic variability present within species
climax community
the final stage of succession, remaining relatively unchanged until destroyed by an event such as fire or human interference
disturbance
an event or force that brings about death to organisms and changes in the ecosystems they inhabit
population growth rate
the percent of change of a population over time (either negative or positive)
