Earth's System Flashcards
System
an assemblage or combination of things or parts forming a complex or unitary whole.
Feedback
the process of returning part of the output of a circuit system or device to the input either to oppose the input or to aid the input positive feedback
Model
to give shape or form to: fashion
Biosphere
The part of earth’s crust, waters, and atmosphere that supports life.
Ecosystem
group of interconnected elements, formed by the interactions of community of organisms with their environments
Biome
a complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species and maintained under the climatic conditions of the region especially such a community that has developed to climax
Organism
a form of life composed of mutually interdependent parts that maintain various vital process
Population
The act or process of population
biotic factor
a living thing,as an animal or plant, that influences of affect an ecosystem
abiotic factor
a nonliving condition or thing
community
a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality
Habitat
the natural environment of an organism
Niche
an ornamental recces in a wall
biodiversity
biological diversity among within plant and animal species in an environment
keystone species
A species whose presence and role within an ecosystem has a disproportionate effect on other organism within the system.
exponential growth
A growth in which the rate is proportional to the increasing number or size in an exponential (rather than arithmetical) or logarithmic progression.
logistic growth
When resources are limited, populations exhibit logistic growth.
carrying capacity
Carrying capacity can be defined as a species’ average population size in a particular habitat.
density dependent
A density-dependent factor is a factor whose effects on the size or growth of a population vary with the population density.
density independent:
those that influence the death rates of organisms or have a limiting effect on the population but do not control the number or range of the population of organisms
population density
Population density is the concentration of individuals within a species in a specific geographic locale.
emigration
Emigration means an animal leaves its home because the habitat is no longer ideal for them and they need to find a more suitable environment.
disturbance
ecological disturbance, an event or force, of nonbiological or biological origin, that brings about mortality to organisms and changes in their spatial patterning in the ecosystems they inhabit.
Resilience
the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
Resistance
the ability not to be affected by something, especially adversely.
Ecological
relating to or concerned with the relation of living organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
