Which ore is aluminium derived from?
Most aluminium is obtained from bauxite ore, which usually contains between 50% and 70% aluminium oxide. The worlds largest producer of bauxite is Australia which produces about 30% of all supplies; followed by China (20%) and Brazil (15%).
State some of the uses of baryte.
-As a drilling fluid in oil and gas extraction. It suspends the rock cuttings and helps to carry these waste mining products up to the surface. Its non-magnetic properties also allow it to cool the drill bits.
-A filler in paints and plastics.
In ceramic and glass production as a brightening agent.
-As a white pigment in the production of textiles, paper and paint.
-In nuclear power as the baryte will block x-rays and gamma rays.
-As barium meals in the health sector. It shows up as white on an x-ray to help show any abnormalities.
How can barium be mined?
Barium is extracted through open-cast mining.
