Earth's layer Flashcards
Continental Crust
Thick, less dense, younger, up up of smaller islands.
Oceanic Crust
Thinner,denser,older, density;2.7g/cm^3,under the ocean.
Lithosphere
Made of crust and tiny bits of mantle, between crust and mantle, solid rock, broke into pieces of plates
Asthenosphere
hot, malleable, semiliquid zone in the upper mantle, directly underneath the lithosphere.
Mantle
divided into two regions, hot semisolid rock 1800 miles thick, denser than crust:less dense than core convection currents
Outer Core
only liquid layer, made of mostly iron and nickel,1800-3200 miles from surface,2890-5150 km from surface, 1400 miles thick
Inner core
extremely hot, 3/4 size the moon, sphere of iron and nickel center of earth,3200-3960 miles from surface, 750 miles in diameter(1200km), 5150=6378 km from surface
Convection currents
a current in fluid
Divergent Boundary
The two tectonic plates move apart.
transform boundary
Slid against each other and the crust is neither formed or destoryed.
Continental Drift
The belief earth’s continents moves.
Asthenospher
Layer in earth’s upper mantle directly under lithosphere and the rock is soft and weak because it’s close to melting.
Theory of plate tectonics
Theory that the earth’s lithosphere is broken into pieces that move and change in size over time.
Mid-ocean ranges
sea-floor mountains
convergent boundary
The two plates oush together by subduction
