Earth + Natural Disasters Flashcards
What is a volcano?
An opening in the earths crust where magma, ash and gas escape.
What is an earthquake
A shaking of the earths crust due to sudden release of energy due to rocks being under stress and then slipping past eachother.
Structure of the earth
ignore 🥰🥰🫣
Describe the crust
-very thin
-split into the oceanic crust (thinner -5km- and more dense)
-continental crust (thicker -50km- but less dense
Describe the mantle
-2900km thick (84% of the earths volume)
-solid but hot
Describe the outer core
-2300km thick, made of iron and nickel
-is liquid
Describe the inner core
-has a radious of 1220lm
-solid metal
-hotter than the suns surface
The crust is broken into sections called..
Tectonic plates
What is a plate boundary
Where two plates meet
Describe the process of convection currents in order
1- the warm core heats the magma at the bottom of the mantle
2- the heated magma is less dense and rises upward
3- the magma cools and sinks back down
4- the magma is forced to move sideward dragging the plate with it
5- the process repeats
Explain construction boundaries
Two played move away from eachother and magma can move up from the mantle, this causes frequent undersea volcanic activity
Describe the process of a destructive plate margin
-the oceanic plate is sub ducted because it is denser and it is melted
-the new magma produced in the mantle is less dense than its surroundings
-the new magma moves up and erupts through the crust.
