Earth before life Flashcards
What is the magnetosphere
The region around a planet dominated by the planets magnetic field
Why is the magnetosphere important for the development of life
It protects earth from solar wind and cosmic radiation by deflecting them
How is the magnetosphere produced
Earths molten iron and nickel outer core spins generating a magnetic field around the earth creating the magnetosphere
What would happen if there was no magnetosphere
The solar wind would destroy the earth’s atmosphere / blow it away
Why is cosmic radiation dangerous
Dangerous to health (cancer causing)
Why is earth’s rotation around the sun important
- Controls how long a year is
- Controls the frequency of seasons (periods of colder and hotter weather
Why is earths tilt on its axis important
It produces seasonal variations which allows for migration, hibernation and dictates life cycles.
Why is earths rotation on its axis important
- Controls day length (24 hr)
- Controls extreme temperatures
- Allows small gaps in photosynthesis
How has Earths position in the solar system allowed for the development of life
Earth’s position in the solar system is perfect for life as it is in the habital zone not too hot or too cold which allows liquid water.
