What is the Mantle?
The thick layer of semi-solid rock beneath the crust.
What is the Core?
The innermost layer of Earth consisting of the outer liquid core and the solid inner core.
What is Plate Tectonics?
The theory that Earth’s lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move and interact.
What are Tectonic Plates?
Large sections of Earth’s crust that move due to convection currents in the mantle.
What is a Convergent Boundary?
A boundary where two tectonic plates collide often forming mountains or causing earthquakes.
What is a Divergent Boundary?
A boundary where two tectonic plates move apart leading to the formation of new crust.
What is a Transform Boundary?
A boundary where two tectonic plates slide past each other causing earthquakes.
What is a Fault?
A crack or fracture in Earth’s crust where movement has occurred.
What is a Volcano?
A vent in Earth’s crust through which molten rock ash
What is an Earthquake?
A sudden shaking of the ground caused by the release of energy along a fault.
What is the Richter Scale?
A scale used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes.
What is the Focus of an Earthquake?
The point within Earth where the earthquake originates.
What is the Epicenter?
The point on Earth’s surface directly above the focus of an earthquake.
What is a Tsunami?

Water that flows over the ground surface into bodies of water such as rivers and lakes.

The process by which organic material is preserved as fossils over time.

The increase in Earth’s average temperature due to the buildup of greenhouse gases.

A small object from space that burns up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere.
What is a Meteorite?
A meteor that survives its passage through Earth’s atmosphere and lands on the surface.
What is a Comet?
A small body of ice and dust that orbits the Sun and produces a glowing tail when heated.
What is an Asteroid?
A small rocky object that orbits the Sun
What is a Solar Eclipse?
When the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun blocking sunlight.
What is a Lunar Eclipse?
When the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon casting a shadow on the Moon.

The movement of phosphorus through Earth’s ecosystems primarily in rocks and soil.
