Earth and Space Science Vocab Flashcards
Earth Science
any various sciences, as geography, geology, or meteorology, that deal with the earth, its composition, or any of its changing aspects.
Astronomy
Study of object’s beyond Earth’s atmosphere
Geology
Study of materials that make up Earth and process that form and change these materials
Meteorology
Studies the air that surrounds our planet; study of atmospheric phenomena such as fog, clouds, snow, rain and lightning
Oceanography
Study of Earth’s oceans including the creatures that inhabit its waters, its physical and chemical properties and the effects of human activities
Lithosphere
Earth’s rigid outer shell, including the crust and the solid uppermost part of the mantle
Hydrosphere
All the water in the Earth’s oceans, lakes, seas, rivers and glaciers plus all the water in the atmosphere
Atmosphere
Blanket of gases surrounding Earth that contains 78% nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and 1% other gases such as argon, carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Biosphere
All of Earth’s organisms and the environments in which they live
Observation
An act of viewing or noting a fact or occurrence using sense for some scientific or other special purpose
Data
Individual facts, statistics, or items of information
Prediction
To declare or tell in advance
Hypothesis
A suggestion explanation for an observation that can be answered by the results of an experiment
Experimental group
A group of subjects who are exposed to the variable under study
Independent variable
Factor that is manipulated/ changes by the experimenter/ scientist in an experiment
Dependent variable
Factor in an experiment that can change if the independent variable is changed
Scientific theory
An explanation based on many observations during repeated experiments that is valid only if all future information supports it
Scientific law
Basic fact that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon
Experiment
A test, trial, or tentative procedure, an act or operation for the purpose of discovering something unknown
Control group
A group of subjects closely resembling the treatment group in many demographic variables but not receiving the active medication or factor under the story and thereby serving as a comparison group when treatment results are evaluated
