define gravity
the force that attracts an object to another object’s center
explain why gravity is different on other planets
the planets weigh different amounts
describe how day and night occurs
The Earth spins on its axis and makes one complete turn every 24 hours - this is called a day. As the earth spins, half of it is lit up by the sun, which is daytime. The other half is in darkness, which is night-time
what is a satellite and give an example of both types
A satellite is the general name given to a body that orbits another body
e.g. ISS = artificial & Moon = natural
what is the moon in relation to the earth
natural satellite and non-luminous object
describe how a lunar eclipse occurs and know how to draw a diagram of it
the earth is directly in between the sun and moon (the moon is on earths shadow & the light arrows go to the top and bottom of earth to block the moon from light)
describe how a solar eclipse occurs and know how to draw a diagram of it
the moon is directly in between the earth and sun (only the middle of the earth is in complete darkness (umbra) & the rest is in partial darkness (penumbra) & there light arrows go to the top and bottom of the moon to block the middle of the earth from light)
how do shadows occur
Opaque objects block out light. The closer to directly above the object the sun is, the smaller the shadow.
describe how the seasons occur (be able to label a diagram of the earth and sun in each season)
the earth’s axis is not vertical but it is still tilted around 23 degrees. This means that at any one time, part of the earth’s surface is closer to the Sun than at any other times, which gives us seasons.
