Earth and Space Flashcards
Astromony
The study of matter in outer space, particularly the positions, composition, motion and energy.
Star
A star is an object made up of gas. It is luminous (gives off light). Nuclear fusion reactions between Hydrogen atoms in the Sun cause it to give off light and heat.
Planet
A planet is a celestial object that is in orbit around a star. In order for something to be classified as a planet it must
- be in orbit around a star
- be big enough to form an almost round shape due to its own gravity pulling it inwards
- have cleared the region around its orbit of other cellestial objects
Our Solar System
TERRESTIAL
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
asteroid belt
JOVIAN
Jupiter, Saturn, [gas giants] , Uranus, Neptune
Moon
An object which is found revolving around a planet. A natural satelite of a planet.
Asteroid
- small rocky body orbiting the Sun
- there is an asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter.
Comet
- a dusty snowball which orbits the Sun
- comets from either Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud
Solar System
A Solar System is a group of planets, asteroids, comets and other celestial bodies around a star. Our Solar System is held together, and the planets remain in orbit due to the Sun’s gravity.
Galaxies
A galaxy is a large system of stars held together by gravity and separated from similar systems by vast regions of space. Our galaxy is called the Milkyway and our neighbouring galaxie is called Andromeda.
