earth and atmospheric science Flashcards
how was the early atmosphere formed
There was intense volcanic activity that released gases that formed the early atmosphere
how did volcanoes add to the early atmosphere
Volcanoes also produced nitrogen which gradually built up in the atmosphere & there may have been small proportions of methane (CH4 ) and NH3
what was the early atmosphere thought to have contained
● Little or no oxygen
● A large amount of CO2
● Water vapour
● Small amounts of other gases
how did water vapour form oceans
Water vapour condensed to form the oceans
how was co2 decreased in the atmosphere as oceans were created
CO2 dissolved in the water and carbonates were precipitated producing sediments, reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
how did the amount of O2 in the atmosphere increase
Algae & plants produced the O2 that is now in the atmosphere by photosynthesis and decreased the % CO2 in the atmosphere by photosynthesis
what is the chemical test for O2
Uses a glowing splint inserted into a test tube of the gas and if the splint relights, the gas is oxygen
how do various gases absorb heat radiated from the eart
electromagnetic radiation from the sun passes into the earths atmosphere. the earth absorbs some radiation, warming up (essential for life on earth) but some of this heat is radiated as infrared radiation which is absorbed by green house gases in the atmosphere. this eventually warms up the atmosphere leading to the greenhouse effect and global warming
