80 people lead by George Donner, set out from Missouri in may 1846
The Donner party’s mistake
Had to abandon cattle when crossing the rockies
Cut off by snow
For 4 months the part are their cattle, then each other!
Many died of starvation
87 set out

The Mormons
Founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith who claimed 2 angels had given him golden plates, which he translated as the Book of Mormon
Why we’re the Mormons persecuted?
Practised polygamy Didn't keep slaves Political power Considered outsiders A group of Mormons ( Danites) attacked people and robbed them Growing numbers

Why did the Mormons move to salt lake?
Escape the non Mormons
State governor of Illinois asked them to leave

Took over the Mormon faith
Firm believer and very organised
Appointed by god to lead the Mormons
Believed the salt lake was THE PROMISED LAND
Problems the Mormons faced FORCED OUT
In spring 1846 mobs looted the Mormons workshops forcing them to leave before they were ready
But Brigham young sent advanced parties to plant crops and build houses before they left
