  1. provincialism of gentry - feared restored monarchy
  2. military followers - yuans generals had gained power for themselves and were worried monarchy threaten this
  3. strength of republicanism - idea of republic had become popular intellectually/monarchy=backward

A

27th july 1926 = nationalist rev army has 85k troops and 6k huangpuofficers
warlords had combined forces of 75k troops
nationalist army had major advatages
- north was divided/many northern troops were badly equipped and poorly trained/nationalist army was disciplines, professional fighting force/jiang had general galen advice and soviet backing
