Q

Problems with her legitimacy

A

Henry VIII needed a son to be king after him. He was married to Catherine of Aragon and had a daughter, but it looked as if Catherine of Aragon could no longer have any more kids.

Henry wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn who he hoped would give him a son. The pope refused the divorce so he created his own church and made himself the supreme head of the church of England . He gave himself a divorce and married Anne.

Many Catholics believe Henry did not have the right to give himself Divorce and he was still married to Catherine of Aragon when Anna Boleyn gave birth to Elizabeth making Elizabeth illegitimate.
