What is the bloody code

A

Introduced gradually from 1688 and 1820. Because of a huge increase in capital crimes, execution became the punishment for: murder, treason, shooting a rabbit, forging bank notes, going around in disguise and stealing fish from the river.

How did crime change (3)

A

Crime rose dramatically in the mid 16th century due to a rising population, prices and falling wages.

16 and 17th century, authorities became much more worried about moral crimes, vagrancy and witchcraft.

18th century, authorities became more concerned over organised crimes such as smuggling and highway robbery.

The role of the sheriff became less important as the role of JP’s grew.

1660, local manner courts and church courts declined.

More common for wealthy villagers to ,are accusations against poorer neighbours.

1550’s, Bridewells houses were introduce where they punished and reformed vagrants.

Number of crimes, punishable by death rose dramatically, and became known as the bloody code.

A

Capital offences were still punishable by hanging.

Cucking and ducking stools, stocks and pillory became more popular.

Prisons continued to be less popular than fines and physical punishments. Mainly use for people awaiting trial.

A

she refused to become catholic in front of King Henry VIII

and was accused of heresy. Turned on the rack and then burnt at the stake.

A

More roads built

Coach travel became more popular

Number of travellers increased

People often carried jewellery with them

People travelled through inlet roads, forests and remote areas.
