  • bear ring, now covered by bear gardens (bear lane and gardens named in memory of historic background)
  • rose alley leads to the still standing rose theatre
  • hope theatre is in bear gardens
  • old barge
  • anchor/paris garden stairs
  • remaining clink street, many streets still have bollards (iron posts) with inscription ‘clink 1812’

why was early modern bankside important [4]

A
  • rose theatre still used today to show Shakespeare’s plays
  • clink was a notorious prison by 1470’s and was inhabited by lawbreakers from liberty of the clink
  • bear bait. arenas shows: entertainment that brings rich & poor together/ provoked violence/ law shut theatres on some days to preserve bear baiting
  • theatres on bankside as it was not popular w/ city but bankside was outside city’s jurisdiction
