The Romans
When did they arrive?
Arrived 43 AD and stayed around 400 years
Who made up their army?
Gauls from France,Germans and Hungarians…also evidence of a black African settlement near York
Their legacy?
Many of our main roads based on Roman ones
Sewage system
Roman towns still exist today…York, Bath, Gloucester, Chester, Lincoln
Much of language and laws come from the Romans
First in Britain to use calendars, coins, glass, bricks
Intro. cabbages, peas, wine, apples, turnips, carrots and cats
The Anglo-Saxons
From 450 AD after Romans left
From where?
Small groups from Denmark and Nth Germany
Other tribes such as Jutes from Nth Germany
What was their religion?
Before converting to Christianity they were pagans and worshipped many gods
Days of the week come from these eg Tiw god of combat ,Tuesday
Thor, protector of mankind, Thursday
Freya, goddess of love and beauty, Friday
Anglo-Saxons legacy?
Gave England its name
Key base languages of English - bed,cat,dog,tree, jump, hunt, fox
Counties and towns were created and named by them eg if it ends in ‘ton’ , ‘wich’, ‘worth’ ‘bun’
The Vikings
Arrived after 800 AD from Denmark, Norway and Sweden
Why?
Like the Anglo- Saxons looking for land to settle on and also for loot
Some attacked and went home, others stayed.
Where did settle?
Took over most of north and east Britain.
Places ending in ‘by’ and ‘ thorpe’ named by thr Vikings
A man of Viking origin became King of England in 1016 (King Cnut)
The Normans
Arrived from 1066
Conquered?
Rich Normans controlled Eng and Wales but failed to take over Scotland and Ireland
What did they build and what is their legacy?
Fine castles, churches, cathedrals
10,000 words come from them
Names like Williwm, Stephen, Emma, Alice
Invented surnames
Intro playing chess and conkers
Changed the way the country was ruled and how people were taxed
