Early Dental Development Flashcards
When do primary teeth erupt?
Not until after birth but they begin to develop way before this.
When do teeth begin to develop?
6th week of embryonic life cycle (in womb)
Epithelial tissue thickens in the potential tooth bearing are forming 2 horse shaped structures these are called the _________?
Dental Lamina
What does dental lamina correspond to?
The enamel organs
What is the enamel organs?
AUSTRALIAN HAT
- along the lamina 10 epithelial swellings (buds) develop.
-2o in total.
- this is the enamel organs of the primary teeth.
What are the Dental Development stages?
- bud
- cap
- bell
- late bell
What happens in the bud stage?
What happens in the cap stage?
Consists of:
- enamel organ increasing in size and changing shape.
- dental papilla (densely cellular are of connective tissue within the centre of the cap)
- dental follicle (layer of fibrous tissue which forms a capsule around the enamel organ.
What happens in the bell stage?
- further increase of enamel organ size and adjacent dental papilla results in the bell shape being produced.
- dental lamina which joined the enamel organ to the oral epithelium begins to disintegrate.
In the late bell stage the enamel organ differentiates into 4 layers, what are they?
- outer enamel epithelium
- inner enamel epithelium
- stratum intermedium
- stellate reticulum
What happens in the outer enamel epithelium?
- covers the convex surface of enamel organ - cuboidal cells.
What happens in the inner enamel epithelium?
- first forms the outline of the shape of the tooth crown
What happens in the stratum intermedium stage?
- a layer of non descript cells next to inner epithelium
What happens in the stellate reticulum stage?
- a zone of star shaped cells.
In the late bell stage cells of the inner enamel epithelium elongate and differentiate into_____?
Ameloblasts
What are ameloblasts?
Enamel forming cells
Before enamel is deposited, cells of the dental papilla adjacent to the new ameloblasts become _____?
Odontoblasts
What are odontoblasts?
Dentine forming cells
What develops in the dental papilla?
Numerous blood vessels and nerves
Once the dental papilla is enclosed in fully formed dentine what is it know as?
The pulp
What does the outer surface of the pulp contain?
Odontoblasts
True or False - the layer of fibrous tissue forming a capsule around the enamel organ, remains in place until tooth eruption?
True
What does the layer of fibrous tissue which forms a capsule around the enamel organ eventually become?
Periodontal ligament
