The first European explored the west coast of Austalia. It was Willem Jansz, a Dutch sea captain. They called the continent New Holland.
What happend in 1768?
Captain Cook left England on a three-year expedition to the Pacific. He landed in Botany Bay on the east coast of Australia in 1770.
What happend in 1770?
Captain Cook landed in Botany Bay.
What happend 26 January 1788?
In 1788 the first settler arrived. This day is called Australia Day. These settlers were criminals. They were sent to Australia because the prisons in England were full.
What happend with the settlers?
The criminal settlers were treated like slaves. There were soldiersto guard them and they had to work hard. Some of them tried to escape, but there were not many places to go.
What happend in 1797?
In 1797 the merino sherp was brought to Australia, and only ten years later the first shipment of wool was sent to England.
Today there about 180 million sheeps in Australia.
