Ear Anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of the external pinna?
A
Transmission of sound waves to TM
2
Q
What antibodies are contained in cerumen?
A
IgG, IgM, IgA
3
Q
Where is the “normal landmark tuft of hair” located in the canal?
A
At the external acoustic meatus in the ventral half fo the canal
4
Q
What pattern do cells migrate from the ear drum?
A
- Start at TM and migrate in centrifugal pattern
- Normal cleaning mechanisms of the ear canal
5
Q
What does the TM separate?
A
External from middle ear
6
Q
What are the 3 parts of the middle ear?
A
- Dorsal
- smallest
- contains head of malleus and incus
- Middle
- aka “Tympanic Cavity Proper”
- adjacent ot TM
- Auditory tube opens here
- Ventral
- largest
- contains septum bulla
- *in cats, this is complete and divides
- difficult to access/assess this area
7
Q
What differs regarding the septum bulla in cats?
A
- Cats: Septum bulla complete
- Divides ventral bulla into two parts:
- Pars tympanica (dorsolateral)
- Pars endotympanica (ventromedial)
8
Q
What structures run through the middle ear?
A
- Facial nerve (CN VII)
- Vagus nerve (CN X)
- Carotid and Lingual arteries
9
Q
What parts of the ear make up the vestibular system?
A
- Saccule
- Utricle
- Semi-circular canals
- filled with endolymph
10
Q
What is/are the macula?
A
- Neurosensory epithelial hairs on the wall of the cavities (saccule, utricle, semi-circular canals).
11
Q
What surrounds the Macula? What is its function?
A
- a gelatinous layer of polysaccharide overlies the macula
- within it are Otoliths = Ca+carbonate crystals
- determine head rotation with movement
