Distress Communication
- An internationally recognized communication indicating that the sender is threatened by grave and imminent danger and requests immediate assistance.
- MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY
- Highest priority communication from ships at sea

Urgent Communication
- Typically a request for medical assistance that does not rise to the level of a Distress, or a critical weather tranmission higher than Safety.
- PAN PAN, PAN PAN, PAN PAN
- Sent on the authority of either the Master of the ship, or person responsible for the mobile station

- A communications transmission which indicates that a station is preparing to transmit an important navigation or weather warning.
- SECURITE SECURITE SECURITE (pronounced “say cure a tay”)
